In directions small
And directions momentous;
Eagle focus guide.

As a child in elementary school, I used to bite my nails to the quick. My mother over and over would tell me I needed to stop – that my hands did not look good. In a casual way I agreed with her, however i continued to bite my nails . At one point she purchased a hot pepper liquid that she ‘painted’ on my nails to make me stop biting down my nails. For many months starting in 5th grade and continuing into 6th grade, she would paint my nails and ask me to also paint my nails with the hot pepper mixture. I would forget it was there and put my fingers in mouth – burning my mouth. Then, I would go to the sink and wash off the liquid. My mothers best efforts to help me stop biting my nails did not seem to work.
Then, something happened that changed everything. I remember one day in 6th grade at Center Street Elementary School in El Segundo looking at the hands of another child who bit his nails in much the same manner that I did, I saw that the hands looked terrible! Then, I looked down at my hands and I saw that my hands looked just the same. I saw that my hands and nails looked terrible – I had not really seen my hands in this way before.
I had changed my angle of perception from personal to objective and as if for the first time I saw my hands as others saw my hands. Then, combining will power to objective emotion free perception: I stopped biting my nails.
In the scheme of things, the act of stopping nail biting was a small thing. However as a lesson in objective perception coupled with will power and determination it was huge.

May every act of my will
be impregnated with
Thy divine vitality.
Ornament with Thy grace
my every concept,
every ex-pression,
every ambition.
O Divine Sculptor,
chisel Thou my life
to Thy design!
