July 6, 2018 Sanctuary at Sunset

With setting of sun
No cooling of tiles.
Hot wind sighs across.

Yesterday evening as the last of the sun's rays were setting in the west, I was outside the Santa Barbara Mission. There was not the expected cooling with the setting of the sun as the sunset brought with it a hot, dry and relentless wind. Whereas there is usually a letting up and a cooling down with the evening, this was not to be the case last night.
It seems there is to be no letting up – no easing up - on the pounding heat at this time. All of us are being blasted by external forces which appear to move inexorably forward with unrelenting force, one of the many risks to us is lethargy. We are also at risk is to become overwhelmed by the magnitude of forces arrayed against us. First the sun and then the hot winds off the desert pound down without ceasing.

Just so, I become overwhelmed by hateful rhetoric in abundance in the world today. Day by day I have waited for it to let up. However, instead of letting up, it becomes more pervasive. It is to the point where the heat of discord seeks to overwhelm day and night without stop.
More than ever we need respite and sanctuary. It is okay to back off for a bit. More than okay it is a necessity that time is taken in the cool dark sanctuary away from the furnace blast of swirling realignment. Inside, hidden from the relentless sun and hot winds of angry change there is a quiet and cool alter of peace. Let us enter the cooling peace daily and with gratitude bring that peace with us back into the world where when we are recharged we once again enter the fray standing with compassion, seeking inclusion of all the earth family in our circle of cooling and peaceful light.

is to carry a portable paradise within you
wherever you go.”
— Paramahansa Yogananda
