Yesterday, driving down the mountain to go spend time with Arjun and Bear, Kai asked me an interesting question: “Is the air around the earth alive?”
Taking a breath – or two (pun intended) – my thought was, “Yes, of course.” However, I did not say this – rather – I asked, “What do you think?” (In my mind, I am thinking Kai may be ultimately considering consciousness, though I say nothing yet, as I do not want to lead the discussion too much, but rather take the meander he is creating at this time.)
His response, “Yes – for sure.” He is adamant and sure in his response.
We then discussed definitions of ‘life’ and Keira piped in with the exchange of “…oxygen and carbon dioxide….” Between plants and animals. It tickled me, that she knew about this and remembered. Kiera said she was not sure if this constituted life as …”it does not have a face.” Though she recognized, that plants, which do not have faces are living beings, she was not so sure she could go so far as to consider the air surrounding the earth as living.
As the conversation ended yesterday, Kai is firmly convinced the air surrounding the earth is living. Keira is considering this possibility but feels she needs more information.
How I love young minds and such discussions! This so reminds me of the talks I had growing up at my father’s knee.
This morning as I cogitate on yesterday’s discussion, I feel my daddy’s presence and perhaps for the first time realize, how much he must have enjoyed just these kinds of discussion with my brother Walt and myself, oh so many years ago. My heart sings as I listen to the ruminations of young minds on verities of the ages. Though I have personal theories – and do share the Gaia theory which I hold dear – yet – it is my ultimate intention to allow them free rein to discover what resonates for them – and then - form their own theories.... ok …. maybe I will encourage just a bit toward the Gaia theory.

This morning, I found a video I would like to show to Kai and Keira of an interview with a well know scientist, James Lovelock – originator (in modern times) of the Gaia theory of our earth. I say ‘modern’ because indigenous / traditionals across the globe have always known our Earth and all that comprises her is living.
Lovelock has said, “If you were a Martian astronomer – so to speak - looking at the Earth to detect signs of life by atmospheric analysis, it would shout back at you, ‘We are a living planet’ – there is no doubt about it – all sorts of things would come immediately from the atmospheric analysis.”
James Lovelock Explains Gaia Hypothesis on The Sacred Balance (TV). Here is a short video clip:

After the short video I will take Kai and Keira to Lovelock’s web site dedicated to his Gaia theory.
