Little Fox So Still

Little Fox, so still.
She’s Listening to the heart.
Sees universes.

Lessons from the four-leggeds includes:
Doing nothing … is not ‘doing nothing’.

When I was a little girl ‘doing nothing’ came so naturally.  I had a few ‘do nothing’ places in which I would spend time.  One of my favorites was a stand of oak trees that lined the east fence of the 2nd and 3rd grade playground at Center Street School in El Segundo, California where I grew up.  During school hours the trees were off limits.  However, on weekends I would go alone to the great old oaks.  The great old oaks were just close enough together that I could climb from tree to tree without ever putting my feet on the ground.  I do not remember thinking great thoughts.  I do not remember fabricating fantasy worlds (though I was good at this as most children left to their own devices are).  The trees were a place to BE.  The hours would fly by as I sat leaning back into the embrace of the welcoming and protective branches of my oaks.  Growing up in a simpler time, the one rule for this little one was ‘be home when the street lights come on’.

Now, as I enter the time of The Forest Dweller, I am relearning the art of being NOW yet more deeply.   Yes, for years I have given time to prayer and meditation, however with the demands of making a living and the distractions of feeding and caring for family and others. those times were usually allotted specific periods that did not intrude on commitments.  Happily, I still have commitments – however – far less and so ….  with joy, I return to my beloved trees.  Unable to climb them as I once did – yet do I soar among the boughs high.

Psalm 46:10            Be still, and know that I am God.
