Lesson from The Turtle

Storms of spring threaten -
Turtle pulls back into shell -
Into reflection.

Perseverance is a good trait. To have what it takes to go the needed distance in the manner needed to create success.
However, in western society we often do not honor the legitimate need to enter seclusion. We praise those who doggedly go forward to meet external goals. We certainly do not recognize that this time spent on inner work can also be a moving forward.
Ruminating. Considering. Percolating. To take the time needed to reflect can also be a form of perseverance. Honor the need to introspect. Certainly we have commitments to keep to family, to work and commitments in other arenas of our busy lives. Find the place of balance. Our souls call us to The Great Work.

February 8 2018 Buffalo Nation

Buffalo Nation:
She faces into chilling snow
When storm does threaten.

When storms come howling across the plains, Buffalo / Tatanka turns and faces into the storm. With power and determination, she faces ‘straight on’ the challenges that come before her. Oh, to live life like a buffalo – a diet pure and simple – an attitude of determination and perseverance through what may be a long winter – moving inexorably in the direction of her True Heart.
Tatanka Oyate / Buffalo Nation. One of the most physically powerful living beings on the North American Continent. The buffalo eats a simple and pure diet of grass, sedges, herbs, twigs, lichen and berries.
Some say, we take on the qualities and strengths of the one whose flesh we eat (and this is the rationale’ for consumption of flesh of animals beyond our survival needs when we live in a local of harsh winters without other food options).
However, it is my observation, Buffalo does not seek strength from others – Buffalo looks within and gathers her power directly from Creator.

“Plain living and high thinking should be your goal. Learn to carry all the conditions of happiness within yourself by meditating and attuning your consciousness to the ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new Joy, which is God. Your happiness should never be subject to any outside influence. Whatever your environment is, don't allow your inner peace be touched by it.”
― Paramahansa Yogananda
